Crossfit over at the HOT side at Crossfit 5833, Malaysia

Andrada celebrated a holiday in Malaysia and because she’s a foodie she definitely had to go to George Town, the capital of amazing food. Luckily for her and her crossfit gains Crossfit 5833 was there to help her out with a workout so that she could get back to her eating. Crossfit 5833 has been around at the same location for about 5 years now, but they will soon expand to accommodate the growing number of members.

Crossfit 5833 in George Town

Communication with the guys from Crossfit 5833 went smooth via e-mail and they were flexible in accommodating a solo traveller who has no idea what her plans two days ahead might be. I registered for an 08:00 AM class. And with all my excitement to try crossfit in Malaysia, I got there 30 minutes early: patiently waiting before before a closed door and sitting on a tire. Getting there is not difficult: you can just take a taxi or a Grab car (Asian Uber). Going by foot, you may have to walk quite a while to get to the location since the box is not situated in the center of town.

The box itself is small and cosy, but it has the main equipment to put in the work. It has fans around the room instead of airco, so you really challenge your body to finish the wod. But that’s crossfit, right? 😉

The WOD

The workout was not an easy one:

  • 3 rounds for time
  • 800m run
  • 21 Power Cleans

Followed by a Body armour part to work on strength:
4 Giant Sets of

  • 10 Kneeling Single Arm Dumbell presses
  • 10 Romanian deadlifts
  • 15 close grip push ups
  • 15 weighted pausing hip extensions

We replaced the run with rowing, because it was raining. I also scaled down the weight from 43 kgs to 35kgs. So that makes the wod sounds easy, right? WRONG! The heat and my lack of training in a humid environment annihilated me and I almost didn’t manage the time cap of 25min.

Nice to know

  • Crossfit 5833 also has a Barbell club : The underdogs barbell club, that teaches the two olympic movements: Clean & Jerk, and Snatch. You can read more about this club on their website.
  • One drop in costs RM 40 (around EUR 8,5 or USD 10). They also have a weekly pass that costs RM 100 (around EUR 22 or USD 25).
  • They have really cool t-shirts with the buldog logo, which cost 60RM/pc (around EUR 13 or USD 15). I bought one, because we have to support those local boxes, right ?
