Star struck with Kari Pearce at Crossfit SPOT, New York

After almost 30 years of making a New York fantasy in her head based on movies, books, magazines and music it was time for Andrada to pack her bags and head over to the big apple. She went on a quick internet brows for a crossfit box and in her search she also fund Crossfit SPOT. It was however, an extra bit of information that convinced her to sign up for a WOD during her stay: the fittest woman in the US, Kari Pearcewas a trainer there.

Crossfit SPOT in Manhattan

Entrance Crossfit Spot

Registering for a workout on their website was a piece of cake (check the Schedule). You do have to pay the moment you register, but after that you are good to go. The same easiness applies to finding their location once you are in New York. It is close to Central Park and close to the subway. I will spare you the details, because Google mapsdoes a better job than me in giving directions.

The people at reception are very friendly, so no need to be shy. They have some personalised merchandise that you can browse, as well as an awesome smoothie bar. I had after my workout the Dirty Monkey smoothie with vegan protein powder… delish!

The box is laid out on two floors. Ground floor with reception, smoothie bar and a workout area, more like open gym (silly me forgot to take pictures of that one). And then the basement with the WOD area, lockers and bathrooms. You get a key for the lockers, but it’s tricky to use it (I messed it up).

The WOD & the class

I registered for a 10 AM class, which means that it was not that busy. However, this also meant that we had more time from the coach and more equipment at our disposal. In other words: use ALL the weightlifting racks.

We started with a light warmup on the air bike and the 2 rounds of accessory work of:
10 Bent over row @10% of your DL
10 GHD back extensions
5/5 airborne lunge

Strength : Back squats

1×7 : 50%
1×5 : 60%
1×5 : 70%
2×3 : 80%
1×3 : 85%
1×2 : 90%
1×1: 95%
1×1: 100%
And if it feels right, go for a PR!

Last part: AMRAP 8 min
8 burpee box jumps
16 alt squat snatches @ 25% SS

Let’s blame the energy of the box, the location and the fact that Kari was our coach of the day, but for the back squat I was able to hit the PR I had one year ago, before my knee injury! So major happiness for about three day after that, as you can imagine!

Nice to know

  • One drop in costs 40$, the normal price in NYC. There was no difference in price if the class was given by Kari.
  • Nice for girls: they have three bowls at the reception: mints, bobby pins and hair bands.
  • The showers are super nice (nicer than my airbnb), they have toiletries, towels and hair driers so you are good to go back in the city after your workout.
  • And last of all: Crossfit Spot electricity plugs for you to charge your phone (also with USB, very nice for us non-US people).
